1970: women’s liberation

Inspired by women’s demonstrations for equality

During the 1970s, many demonstrations are held in Oslo for women’s liberation. As a result, women gain more opportunities to work outside the home, leading them to look for clothing providing them more freedom. This is reflected in changing fashion and the rise of trouser suits and wrap dresses, marking a shift from previous years when trousers were only acceptable for days spent around the house. We have come a long way in Norway regarding equality between men and women and women’s rights over their bodies and dress codes. Unfortunately, in many countries, this is still not the case. The window display illustrates the continuous human rights struggle for justice and equality that is just as relevant today as it was then.
